The greenest option is not always a new purchase
Sustainable technology starts with understanding what you already own, how it is used and whether it can remain secure and supported. Replacing a working device purely for a “green” label can miss the wider lifecycle picture.
Measure the practical trade-offs: energy use, repairability, remaining support, reliability and disposal. Cloud or remote work can change an environmental footprint, but neither automatically guarantees a lower one.

Review power settings and underused infrastructure.
What to check
Coordinate sleep and maintenance settings with IT. Consolidate workloads only after assessing resilience, performance and migration impacts.
5. Review cloud and working arrangements
Consider the whole operating model.
What to check
Provider reporting, data location, utilisation and commuting changes can all matter. Do not assume a universal emissions reduction.
6. Reuse securely
A device must still be fit for its new role.
What to check
Confirm updates, remove business accounts and sanitise storage through an approved process before transfer.
7. Recycle responsibly
Use an appropriate collection or recycling route.
What to check
Australia’s NTCRS provides eligible household and small-business computer recycling services. Check accepted equipment and local arrangements; do not assume recycling includes data sanitisation.
